Alabama Literacy Act

The Alabama Literacy Act, passed by the Alabama Legislature in 2019, was created to help ensure that every child develops strong reading skills by the end of third grade. Under the law, students must demonstrate sufficient reading skills before being promoted to fourth grade.

At Coffee County Schools, helping children become confident, successful readers has always been one of our highest priorities. We are committed to providing high-quality reading instruction and aligning our practices with the guidance of the Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Literacy Act.

Helping Every Child Become a Reader

Every child learns at a different pace, and we believe that early support makes a lasting difference. We use a comprehensive system to monitor student progress, identify reading challenges early, and provide the instruction and support students need to become successful readers.

Our state-approved assessment, i-Ready, is administered at least three times each year to measure reading growth and help teachers make informed instructional decisions. We also invest in the Phonics First program, ongoing professional learning for teachers, and dedicated reading intervention services to ensure every student receives high-quality, research-based reading instruction.

If a student is identified as needing additional reading support, school personnel will partner with parents or guardians to discuss the student's progress, review an individualized reading improvement plan, and share practical strategies and resources for use both at school and at home. We believe that when schools and families work together, students have the greatest opportunity for success.
